BRANDON — A father has admitted in court that he purposely violated his probation order so he could be sent to the Brandon jail to support his son, who’s serving time there.

Dominic Dowan, 46, pleaded guilty to breaching a probation order from November 2024 that prohibits him from owning, possessing, carrying or converting anything into a weapon.

Crown attorney Caroline Lacey called Dowan’s reasoning for wanting to go to jail “bizarre.”

“That’s just ridiculous and honestly a waste of police time to be having to deal with someone trying to go into jail to support someone else,” Lacey said in Brandon provincial court on Thursday.

Crews work to restore power to final 6,500 customers after storm

About 6,500 Manitoba Hydro customers — mainly in and around Winnipeg — were still without power Friday morning, more than 24 hours after severe thunderstorms rolled through southern areas.

Some outages could continue into Friday night, the Crown corporation said.

“Crews are repairing damaged power lines, poles, transformers and other equipment as quickly and safely as possible,” a statement said.

Hydro said crews made significant process overnight to restore power to thousands of customers. More than 30,000 customers lost power due to storms that began Wednesday and continued early Thursday.

Keep free youth transit simple

Cordella Friesen and Noëlle DePape 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

For too many young Winnipeggers, the cost of a bus pass is a barrier. It can mean missing a class, turning down a job opportunity or staying home from a program that could change their future.

Free transit for youth in Winnipeg is a transformational policy that will pay dividends for decades to come — advancing key environmental, educational and poverty reduction goals in our communities.

As champions for young people across our city, BGC Winnipeg and the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg commend Premier Wab Kinew and Mayor Scott Gillingham for recognizing that investing in young people is investing in Winnipeg’s future. By uniting to make transit free for youth across Winnipeg, both levels of government are delivering a forward-thinking policy that has the potential to have generational impact.

At a time when families are stretched to their limits by inflation, free transportation for youth offers real, immediate relief.

COVID picture remains bleak in Manitoba with record cases, three more deaths

Danielle Da Silva 6 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020

A day after the province's top doctor admonished Manitobans for their cavalier approach to COVID-19, a starker picture emerged Tuesday, as a record 184 new cases and three more deaths were announced, including two patients at St. Boniface Hospital.

A man and a woman, both from Winnipeg and in their 80s, were patients at the province’s second largest hospital when they were diagnosed with COVID-19. A female in her 60s linked to the outbreak at Parkview Place care home also died.

Manitoba's death toll stands at 58.

St. Boniface Hospital is managing an outbreak of the virus which has spread to include three units (B5, E5 and E6) and has infected 23 patients and 10 staff members.

Take action before emergency declarations

Marwa Suraj 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Manitoba is living through several emergencies at once.

An HIV public-health emergency. A toxic drug crisis. Rising hepatitis C. Severe housing pressures. Communities asking for help before more people are lost.

In July, leaders from four Island Lake First Nations declared a regional public-health emergency. They described addiction, infection, homelessness and overcrowding converging in communities that do not have enough prevention, treatment or locally led care to meet the need.

These may look like separate problems.

New Royal MTC artistic director to ensure everyone gets an equal voice on stage

It’s kind of like going from a nomadic existence to suddenly having two homes.

That’s what it’s like for Kelly Thornton to shift from her 17-year tenure at Toronto’s Nightwood Theatre to come to Winnipeg to take the helm of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.

When she takes over the role of artistic director from retiring A.D. Steven Schipper in June of next year, Thornton, 53, will program for two venues, the Royal MTC’s John Hirsch Mainstage and the Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatre.

Keep in mind that, in her years at Nightwood, Thornton had no single theatre to call home.
