TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be aware of the limitations of the moon alert and agree to nothing important. Good news: Mercury stops being retrograde, which will reduce the transportation delays, car problems and mixed-up communications you’ve been dealing with for a while.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

With fiery Mars in your sign now, you have lots of energy and drive. However, be aware of the limitations the moon alert. (See above.) You’ll be happy to know Mercury ceases being retrograde, which will improve your finances, especially in terms of delays and mistakes.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Excellent news. Mercury has been retrograding in your sign since June 29. Now this is over, which means your life will regain a greater degree of normalcy and silly mistakes will be reduced along with delays and transportation problems. Thank goodness.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Be aware of the moon alert. Fortunately, you are in a strong position because both the sun and lucky Jupiter are in your sign. Fiery Mars is also well-placed, promoting teamwork, competitive sports and athletics. Starting now, life takes on forward momentum.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

With Venus in your sign, you’re enjoying socializing with others. Nevertheless, you also have a strong tendency now to work alone or behind the scenes. You’re also ambitious to achieve. With this in mind, be aware there’s a moon alert. Volunteer for nothing.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

For the last month, Mercury has been retrograding at the top of your chart affecting your relations with bosses, parents and authority figures from the past. As of now, this is over. Although you might be focused on financial matters, restrict spending to food and gas.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The moon is in your sign, which gives you a slight advantage over the other signs. However, most of this day is a moon alert. (See above.) Therefore, tread carefully and restrict your spending to food and gas. Don’t volunteer for anything. Postpone important decisions.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

It’s encouraging that Mercury retrograde is over because it might have delayed financial matters for you, especially dealing with third parties, partners or the government. Go forward with confidence now to make plans for travel or endeavours related to publishing, medicine, the law or higher education.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In the last month, Mercury has been retrograding opposite your sign, attracting ex-partners and old friends back into your world. (This might have been a mixed blessing for some.) At any rate, as of now, Mercury retrograde is finished. However — check moon alert above.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’ll be relieved to know Mercury retrograde stops because it has been creating equipment problems, delays and confusion with respect to your job, health and even perhaps regarding your pet. This means your efforts to work will be more efficient and reliable. Yay.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might feel restless for adventure or a change. You’re working hard but you also want to explore something new. Fortunately, Mercury ceases being retrograde. Nevertheless, most of this day is a moon alert so just bide your time. It’s all systems go tomorrow.

Too close to call in Assiniboia

Marsha McLeod 3 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023

The Winnipeg constituency of Assiniboia was too close to call Tuesday, with the NDP candidate leading over the incumbent Tory minister of seniors and long-term care.

At 11:15 p.m., Elections Manitoba, reporting just seven of 18 polls, had the NDP’s Nellie Kennedy with a 562-vote lead over Progressive Conservative incumbent Scott Johnston in the swing riding on the western edge of the city.

Losing the seat would be a blow for the Tories, but it would be a moral, rather than a functional, one. A win for the PC incumbent would do little to dent the NDP’s majority victory. Liberal Charles Ward was running a distant third.

A NDP win would be a reversal. In the 2016 and 2019 elections, the party lost Assiniboia to the PCs by roughly 16- and nine-point margins, respectively. Johnston won with 44 per cent of the vote in 2019.

Jazz fest's pop-up venue an experiment in sound design and architecture

Erin Lebar 6 minute read Tuesday, Jun. 18, 2019

The Winnipeg International Jazz Festival prides itself on being a downtown event with Old Market Square serving as its hub for six days of free concerts and headlining acts filling venues such as the Burton Cummings Theatre and the Centennial Concert Hall.

But this year, the festival is expanding its boundaries by collaborating with RAW:Gallery to create RAW:JazzFest, a pop-up venue just outside of the downtown borders in St. Boniface at Parc Elzéar Goulet on Taché Avenue overlooking the Red River.

"It felt like a unique opportunity to create a concert experience for Winnipeggers that they haven’t had before, and to also kind of be part of making a cool building. There’s unique value in that," says jazz fest artistic director Mike Falk.

"We love having music in small spaces; I think that when people are crushed together a bit more their kinetic energy bounces around and makes for good shows, so I think with this project it’s definitely designed to both animate the space and animate the people, and have some fun, as well."

Day 1 customers storm pot stores across Winnipeg

Solomon Israel, Carol Sanders and Alexandra Paul 15 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018

Winnipeggers were keen to buy legalized cannabis Wednesday online and in line.

Cannabis prohibition in Canada ended as of Wednesday morning, but the stigma around using marijuana persisted for many people lined up outside Winnipeg's new, legal cannabis stores on a brisk, clear day.

Shoppers of all ages tended to be shy about giving their names to inquiring reporters. But when the doors finally opened, those Manitobans ran the gauntlet of cameras for their first chance to buy weed without breaking the law.

Here's what happened on Wednesday at four legal cannabis outlets across the city.

Canada's little-known wartime internment camps

Morgan Lowrie, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Monday, Nov. 9, 2020

MONTREAL - In 1940, a Jewish student in the United Kingdom named Edgar Lion was sent to Canada against his will on a ship that carried both German and Austrian Jews and Nazi prisoners of war.

And when he first arrived at an internment camp in Trois-Rivieres, Que., the Austrian-born Lion quickly realized the local citizens gathered near the camp entrance didn’t know the difference between the two groups.

“People were cursing us and throwing stones at us. We had to cross a gauntlet of citizens who knew some of us were prisoners of war, but (didn’t know) some of us were just ordinary prisoners," he said in a recent interview.

"We were in the wrong place. We weren’t supposed to be interned.”
