TORONTO – Health officials in British Columbia believe there is a new case of the novel coronavirus in the province and are waiting for results to be confirmed by the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg. There have been four confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Canada — three in Ontario and one in B.C. Here is a timeline of Canadian cases.

Jan. 25, 2020: A man in his 50s who arrived in Toronto from Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the outbreak, becomes the first “presumptive” case of the new coronavirus in Canada. The man called 911 as soon as he got sick with relatively minor symptoms and was placed in isolation in Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital.

Jan. 26, 2020: The wife of the Toronto man who was Canada’s first “presumptive” case of the new coronavirus becomes the second presumptive case. The woman is kept in home isolation.

Jan. 27, 2020: The National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg confirms that a man in quarantine in Sunnybrook Hospital is Canada’s first documented case of the new coronavirus.

Jan 28, 2020: Health authorities confirm Canada’s second case of the novel coronavirus. The woman had recently travelled to Wuhan with her husband, who was the first case confirmed in Canada.

Jan 28, 2020: Health officials in British Columbia say a man in his 40s is presumed to have the new coronavirus and is doing well as he recovers at his Vancouver home. B.C.’s health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, says the man often works in China and voluntarily isolated himself upon returning to Canada.

Jan. 28, 2020: The presumed case of the new strain of coronavirus in B.C. is confirmed by the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.

Jan. 31, 2020: Toronto man hospitalized with the novel coronavirus is well enough to go home. Sunnybrook Hospital says he’ll continue to recover at home, where his wife is also in self-isolation.

Jan. 31, 2020: Ontario’s third case of the new coronavirus is confirmed. The patient, a woman in her 20s, had travelled to the affected area in China. The London university student initially tested negative for the virus, but a subsequent test at the national lab in Winnipeg was positive. Health officials say her symptoms are minor.

Feb. 4, 2020: Henry says officials believe a second case of the new coronavirus has been confirmed in B.C. It is a presumptive confirmed case until tests are completed by the national lab. Henry says the woman had family visiting from China’s Hubei province and she is in isolation at her home.

Klein claims PCs offered him party position to exit 2022 mayoral race to help Gillingham win

Carol Sanders 6 minute read 7:01 PM CDT

Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein said he was offered a position with the provincial Tories if he pulled out of the 2022 mayoral race that saw then-city councillor Scott Gillingham defeat former mayor Glen Murray.

Klein made the revelation on Monday as he and Mike Vogiatzakis swapped accusations of offering an inducement to leave the current mayoral race. Both candidates allege that they were offered a position at city hall by the other — if victorious in the Oct. 28 election — in exchange for withdrawing.

“When I ran for mayor last time, a person with the (Progressive) Conservative Party of Manitoba came to my office and sat me down and said, ‘Look, we would like you to pull out of the race. There’s two weeks left. We would like you to pull out of the race, we’ll get you something in the party, but we need to open the door so that Glen Murray doesn’t win and Scott (Gillingham) does,” Klein told the Free Press.

“They didn’t really offer a lot. How it was described to me, and we’re talking four years ago now, so it’s memory, was that (they said) ‘Kevin, you’re only splitting the vote, so let’s find a place for you with the (Progressive) Conservative party. Back out and throw your support behind Scott. That would be the best thing for you to do’… I disagreed.”

Whistleblower pharmacist fined for misconduct after complaint

Nicole Buffie 4 minute read 4:57 PM CDT

A Manitoba pharmacist who made complaints against a colleague that led to sanctions against him has now also been fined due to her own conduct.

Portage la Prairie pharmacist Caitlin Giercke was fined $15,000 for dispensing prescriptions for drugs to patients on multiple occasions early and without prescriptions.

The investigation by the College of Pharmacists of Manitoba into Giercke’s conduct was triggered by a complaint she made about her colleague, Glen Pauch, who in June was fined $100,000 after the panel found he had dispensed a massive amount of drugs that could not be accounted for.

On Oct, 25, 2021 Giercke reported concerns about Pauch’s treatment of a patient who was regularly receiving refills of an opioid 17 to 18 days early without authorization. Giercke also said she was concerned Pauch had been misusing prescription medication.

U.S. court denies man’s appeal in human smuggling case where family died near Emerson

Erik Pindera 3 minute read 2:46 PM CDT

A United States court of appeal has upheld the conviction and sentence for a man found guilty of smuggling Indian nationals into Minnesota from Manitoba, which resulted in the deaths of a family in 2022.

The frozen bodies of parents Jagdish Patel, 39, and Vaishaliben Patel, 37, their three-year-old son Dharmik, and their 11-year-old daughter, Vihangi, were found frozen to death in a field east of Emerson in January 2022.

Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, 30, was one of two men convicted by jurors of four charges in November 2024 for their roles in the large-scale human smuggling ring tied to the family’s death.

Patel, who is not related to the victims, was sentenced to just over 10 years in prison in May 2025.

Police seize cocaine valued at $1.5M, about $750K in cash in raid on St. Vital house

Scott Billeck 4 minute read 3:30 PM CDT

A St. Vital homeowner and her husband were going about their business during an afternoon last month when police officers in tactical gear suddenly appeared, walking across their front lawn.

The target was a few doors down: a maroon split-level home on a quiet stretch of Satinwood Place, within earshot of children playing outside at a nearby school.

The homeowner, who asked not to be named to protect their privacy, said the police presence caught the couple by surprise in the Southglen neighbourhood, where they weren’t accustomed to seeing that kind of activity.

“We never heard the (police) cars pull up, but there were cars blocking the entrance to the street from both sides,” said the neighbour. “They had a shield, a battering ram — everything. Just not used to seeing that.”

The alternative is in the ground

Stuart Williams 4 minute read Wednesday, Jul. 29, 2026

The cheapest 750 megawatts isn’t a methane plant. It’s our own furnaces.

Manitoba Hydro wants to build up to $3 billion worth of additional methane turbines near Brandon — 750 megawatts of fossil-fuelled power, to get us through the coldest winter evenings and the driest years.

As the Public Utilities Board weighs the plan this summer, Manitobans should ask a simple question — is burning methane really the cheapest way to keep the lights on and the furnaces running?

The evidence says no.
