A star University of Manitoba professor under investigation for allegations of sexual and financial misconduct has decided to retire, according to the university.

The U of M began alerting students and staff by email Thursday about the departure of Peter Jones, the founding director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals.

Jones was a top fundraiser and one of the more well-known professors at the Winnipeg-based school.

In December, the Free Press reported he was the subject of complaints from U of M students and staff dating back more than a decade and it appeared school administration had previously turned a blind eye toward the allegations.

The following week, Jones was placed on leave pending an internal investigation. He has not returned previous requests for comment.

U of M spokesman John Danakas confirmed Jones had informed the school of his retirement Wednesday. He wouldn’t elaborate on details of the school’s investigation nor whether it was complete.

“Investigations remain confidential in order to protect the integrity of the process, in the immediate and long terms,” Danakas said by email Thursday. “Rotimi Aluko remains acting director of the centre.”
