Thirteen teacher complaints made in three months, misconduct report shows

THERE were 13 disclosures about teacher-related misconduct — with an “almost even” split between employer and public tipsters — during the first quarter of the year.

Four of the 13 initial cases flagged to Bobbi Taillefer, Manitoba’s commissioner of teacher professional conduct, were dismissed, according to a new 16-page report.

“Remember, it’s only certified teachers that are covered,” said Taillefer, whose office fields and investigates complaints.

“This is hypothetical — if a person made a complaint about a teacher that was uncertified and not covered by the legislation, then I would be required to let them know that this process does not cover that (teacher) and why.”

Trustees want say in school zone redesign

Trustees are calling on Winnipeg City Council to redesign 30 km/h school zones to better protect everyone who lives, learns and works in their wards — and they want a say in an infrastructure makeover.

For Ryan Palmquist, an active cyclist, dad and first-term trustee, road safety is both a passion and frequent source of frustration.

His son’s trek to École Varennes serves as a daily reminder of why he remains committed to the cause.

“My oldest son crosses a crosswalk — every single day, twice a day, to go to school — where a kid died,” the father of three said.

Candidates for open council seat racing to photo (radar) finish

Elmwood-East Kildonan is home to the top ticket-generating speed trap in a 30 km/h school zone in all of Winnipeg — a source of ongoing frustration for drivers.

More than 65,000 camera flashes have caught speeders on Talbot Avenue and raised millions of dollars for the city over the last decade.

But is photo-radar technology making River Elm School students and others in the ward safer?

City council byelection candidates Emma Durand-Wood and Chris Sweryda, two of the seven people vying for the open seat, both have a lengthy response to the question.

Safety concerns prompt more parents to drive kids to school, creating more traffic: CAA survey

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025

A new study suggests more Manitoba parents are driving their children to school because of traffic safety concerns, in turn creating more congestion.

Ahead of back-to-school season, CAA Manitoba has released the results of a spring survey on school zones.

The results draw on the experiences of 516 parents and guardians who had children attending kindergarten to Grade 8 in 2024-2025.

Nine in 10 respondents said they had witnessed “dangerous behaviours” — most commonly, speeding, motorists blocking bus zones and distracted driving — around a school zone.
