OTTAWA – Stephen Gogolev, who was forced to withdraw from last week’s Canadian senior figure skating championships due to COVID-19, has been named to Canada’s team for the world junior championships.
The 17-year-old from Toronto trains in the U.S., and while he tested negative before travelling to Ottawa, he was randomly selected for a PCR test upon landing and tested positive.
Gogolev won silver at the 2019 Canadian championships when he was just 14. He won the junior Grand Prix Final the same year.

Wesley Chiu, who won bronze at the senior national championships but is still a junior at 16, is Canada’s other men’s singles entry at the world juniors in Sofia, Bulgaria, March 7-13.
Justine Miclette and Lia Pereira are Canada’s two women’s singles entries. Canada’s ice dance teams are Nadia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont and Natalie D’Alessandro and Bruce Waddell.
The two pairs teams — Summer Homick and Marty Haubrich and Brooke McIntosh and Benjamin Mimar — must achieve a minimum technical score before competing in Bulgaria.
