A MAN suspected of being a prolific shoplifter with an eye for power tools has been arrested.
Schuyler Stirling Bowman, 36, has been charged with 23 counts of theft under $5,000, 12 counts of not complying with a recognizance, and one charge each of identify fraud and trafficking in property obtained by crime worth more than $5,000.
Bowman, who was arrested at a store on March 12 at about 5 p.m., has been detained in custody.
Winnipeg police said on Saturday that a suspect went into various home improvement stores in the 1500 block of Regent Avenue, 700 block of Empress Street, 1900 block of Abinojii Mikanah, 1600 block of Kenaston Boulevard and the 800 block of Leila Avenue, between Jan. 4 and March 12.
Police said hundreds of dollars worth of power tools were taken each time. Police didn’t say the name of the stores, but there are Home Depot locations in each of those blocks.
According to police three different locations of the store were hit on Feb. 5 alone, with $556 worth of property taken from each.
Police said each of the shoplifting incidents were caught on store security cameras.
Police said, someone using stolen identification, would then go into a pawn shop on Main Street where more than 400 items were pawned between July 11 of last year and March 1.
Police said up to $140,000 worth of property was pawned for $34,600 in cash. Investigators were able to recover about $12,000 in stolen goods at the shop.
Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said the matter is still under investigation and there is the potential for more charges to be laid.
