BRANDON — A number of mayors have decided not to run for re-election in western Manitoba municipalities.

Heads of council in Dauphin, Neepawa, Boissevain-Morton and Riverdale have bowed out of the race ahead of the Oct. 28 civic election.

OTTAWA – Nevada’s Mineral County went years without bus service. Its rural towns, spread out like most of northern Manitoba, lost Greyhound service in the 1990s, ending a lifeline to the outside world.

“It impacted a lot of people,” recalls Chris Hegg, vice-chairman for the county's board of commissioners. “We're kind of on the frontier, as they call it.”

He recalls ads in the local newspaper, where adults working in cities offered to pay local residents with a car to bring their senior parents to medical and veteran appointments in Reno or Las Vegas. “It became a barter service,” he said.

Those ads finally stopped when a subsidized bus service started serving the county seat of Hawthorne in 2014.

Governments fund AI training for aerospace, manufacturing workers

Aerospace and manufacturing workers in Manitoba will be trained on digital traceability, production data and applied artificial intelligence through a government-funded pilot program.

The federal and provincial governments announced a joint $500,000 for the AeroTrace Workforce Pilot program on Thursday.

Manitoba Aerospace and Defence (formerly Manitoba Aerospace) will deliver the training through the Canada-Manitoba Workforce Tariff Response Program.

Mode40, a Manitoba firm, will assist. The data intelligence company built AeroTrace, which is a traceability and supplier-readiness platform focused on aerospace and defence supply chains.

No charges after man suffers facial fractures in police encounter

Manitoba’s police watchdog recommends no charges against officers after a man suffered facial fractures after an incident with police.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to the intersection of Broadway and Furby Street at about 5:15 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2025, after a report of a disoriented, naked man running in and out of traffic and attempting to enter vehicles.

Officers called paramedics, who medically cleared the man, police previously stated. Officers drove him home, but the man suddenly ran off as they approached his apartment door.

After a short foot chase, officers caught up with him and tried to escort him back to a police vehicle.

“When you add the United States and Venezuela together, we have more than 60 per of the oil in the world. So it’s perhaps the biggest deal. It was a war, but it’s perhaps the biggest deal ever made. To the victor belong the spoils.” — U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to the United Nations on Tuesday. (And a point of clarification — combining U.S. and Venezuelan oil would amount to 22 per cent of global oil reserves.)

It is quite the juxtaposition: Lincoln speaking in one of his strongest speeches, making the case that slavery should not be extended to the Northern Territories of the U.S. It was a sentence — the closing line in his speech, in fact — which argued that moral truth and justice will prevail against brute force, and that moral behaviour will, in itself, become power.

Donald Trump essentially argued that the obverse is true: that brute force justifies all behaviour — saying that might is right. The end of seizing control justifies the means, the means in this case being an invasion of Venezuela and the end being gaining de facto control of an independent nation’s resources.

BEIJING - World health officials expressed “great concern” Wednesday that a dangerous new virus is starting to spread between people outside of China, a troubling development as China and the world frantically work to contain the outbreak. For a second day, the number of infections grew dramatically.

The new virus has now infected more people in China than were sickened there during the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak. On Wednesday, the number of cases jumped to 5,974, surpassing the 5,327 people diagnosed with SARS.

The death toll, which rose to 170 on Wednesday, is still less than half the number who died in China from SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. Scientists say there are many questions to be answered about the new virus, including just how easily it spreads and how severe it is.

In a report published Wednesday, Chinese researchers suggested that person-to-person spread among close contacts occurred as early as mid-December. Based on the first 425 confirmed cases, the researchers estimate that each infection led to 2.2 others on average. That’s a bit more than ordinary flu but far less than some other respiratory diseases such as whooping cough and tuberculosis. The rate for SARS, a cousin to this new virus, was estimated to be 3.
