Police are investigating after a motorist was airlifted to hospital in critical condition following a single-vehicle rollover in east Transcona during the early morning hours Sunday.

The Winnipeg Police Service was alerted about a crash near the intersection of Redonda Street and Victoria Avenue East shortly before 2 a.m., Const. Claude Chancy said.

Chancy said an adult male — the only person believed to be involved in the incident — was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries.

He did not have an update on the man’s condition 12 hours after police responded to reports of the crash near Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau and Murdoch MacKay Collegiate.

Redonda Street remained closed until Sunday afternoon between Kildare Avenue East and Victoria Avenue East as authorities investigated.

A damaged vehicle could be seen on its side in a boulevard, surrounded by broken glass and car parts, mid-morning.

A woman who identified herself as the sister of the motorist on social media declined to answer any questions.

“We (his family) are taking our time,” she said in a message to the Free Press.

Melissa Powell said she hasn’t been able to stop thinking about the driver since she heard a firework-like bang go off in her neighbourhood.

Powell and her partner were hosting a late-night get-together in their backyard when the collision happened, she said.

“It really sobered all of us up,” Powell said. “We couldn’t have fun after that, that’s for sure.”

The homeowner recalled there was widespread confusion at first, but the friends understood something serious had happened when sirens started blaring and they saw flashing lights.

While noting she lives in a residential area near multiple schools, Powell said it’s not uncommon to hear motorists honk or slam on their brakes near Rothshire Drive.

Parked cars on Redonda Street often make it difficult for drivers to see when they’re turning onto the thoroughfare, she said.

At least one firetruck, two ambulances and multiple police cars arrived on the scene, in addition to a helicopter, Powell said.

“I can’t imagine how (the family is) feeling. They’re in our thoughts. We’re sorry for what they have to go through,” she said.

STARS air ambulance reported it was dispatched to a call in Winnipeg at 2:08 a.m.

Spokesperson Blake Robert confirmed a male patient was flown from the scene to the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition, although he didn’t have any more details Sunday.

Winnipeg police are still investigating the crash.

“Although STARS missions within the City of Winnipeg are not frequent, they do occur periodically,” Robert said in an email.

“The circumstances for each mission vary but, as with missions to rural and remote areas, the response is coordinated between multiple agencies and is physician-led.”

STARS responded to six calls within city limits during the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The unusual sight of a helicopter flying above the city in the early hours of the morning piqued the interest of Xander Painter-Custance.

Painter-Custance said he and his uncle, who had been out playing darts at a nearby bar, followed the aircraft and came across a totalled car with multiple wheels missing. Tires were scattered in different areas, he said.
