A long-standing furniture store in Winnipeg was hit by fire Wednesday morning.

Nairn Avenue in East Elmwood was closed in both directions after a fire at the Dufresne Furniture warehouse at 874 Nairn.

Fire crews were called to the building around 2:25 a.m. Firefighters declared the fire under control at 8:50 a.m.

The fire appeared to be confined to the warehouse and not the Dufresne showroom at 880 Nairn Ave. The two buildings are connected.

Jessa Earle, vice-president of human resources for the Dufresne Group, confirmed the location is temporarily closed but previous customer purchases were unaffected.

Customers should call the company’s Ellice Avenue location at 204-989-9900.

Earle said Dufresne will provide further updates through its social media channels, but did not provide any information on the state of the store or how much, if any, product was affected by the blaze.

Firefighters were expected to be on scene for part of the day Wednesday.

Nairn is blocked between Chester and Kent streets. Water from fire trucks has flooded area streets. The city advised in a press release Wednesday afternoon that motorists continue to avoid the area.

No injuries have been reported.
