Colton and Kadriana Lott’s margin for error will be slim at the Canadian mixed doubles curling trials this week, a lesson they learned on the first day of action.

The Winnipeg Beach couple, playing in their first trial together, opened their quest to wear the Maple Leaf with a 1-1 record at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool, N.S. on Monday.

The Lotts began with a golden-calibre performance in a 7-2 triumph over Alex Robichaud and Melissa Adams of New Brunswick that needed just seven ends to reach a result. The country’s fifth-ranked tandem started fast, stealing points in three straight ends including three in the second frame. The teams traded singles for the remainder of the contest.

A promising start was succeeded by a more challenging matchup against Jaelyn and Jim Cotter of British Columbia, which ended in a 7-5 defeat for the Manitobans in an extra end. The father and daughter duo improved to 2-0.

The Lotts struggled throughout the contest, Kadriana finishing with a 61 per cent shooting percentage and Colton throwing at a 76 per cent clip.

Tied 3-3 entering the sixth frame, the Lotts used their power play but went on to concede a steal of one. The Cotters stole another point in the seventh end, pushing their lead to two going home.

On the last rock in the eighth, a sensational draw to the button from Kadriana into a crowded house scored a pair for the Manitobans and sent the contest to a ninth end. Owning the hammer, the Cotters easily strung together a few quality shots to land two points and the victory.

The Lotts are back for another pair of contests today. They open the day against Taylor Reese-Hansen and Corey Chester of B.C. (0-2) at 10:30 a.m. CT then play New Brunswick’s Jennifer Armstrong and B.C.’s Tyrel Griffith (1-1) at 5:30 p.m. CT.

Games can be watched on Curling Canada’s YouTube channel and TSN+.
