Devi Sharma squeaks in win in Old Kildonan

Devi Sharma narrowly held on to her city council seat in the Old Kildonan ward for the second time.

Sharma, at 5,922 votes, beat out former board chair of the Winnipeg School Division and nurse, Suzanne Hrynyk, at 5,732 votes. Donovan Martin came in third with 2,932.

Sharma has represented Old Kildonan since the last election in 2010 and acted as the council’s speaker.

“I feel humble and privileged that residents of Old Kildonan chose me for another term,” said Sharma at her headquarters.

At Sharma’s campaign headquarters, people were loudly chattering the entire night. Sharma’s camp was bringing out the food and playing the party tunes well before polls closed.

That was a stark contrast to her close competitor Hrynyk. About two-dozen people snacked on spring rolls and huddled around a laptop that was sitting on a chair at Hrynyk’s makeshift headquarters.

Hrynyk and her supporters were hopeful right until the end, and cheered for her even though the polls were not in her favour.

“It’s obviously not the outcome that all of my volunteers and supporters had hoped for. I still believe that there are a lot of voters in Old Kildonan area that don’t feel they are properly represented, but the majority of voters have spoken,” said Hrynyk.
