ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Be aware of the limitations of the moon alert. Nevertheless, this can be a warm and happy day, especially with family members. This is the only new moon all year that offers you a chance to think how to improve your home and relations with family.

Fleabag creator/star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is 41 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be aware that most of this day is a moon alert. Restrict your spending to food and gas. However, the new moon is an excellent opportunity to think about your style of communicating. Do you genuinely listen? Do people understand you?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The only new moon that occurs in your money house all year is happening. Meanwhile, there is a moon alert. Therefore, be careful about spending! Do your homework, but restrict spending (during moon alert) to food and gas.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This day has its opportunities and challenges. The new moon in your sign is a lovely opportunity to take a realistic look in the mirror and improve your image. What kind of impression do you create? Meanwhile — there’s a moon alert! No shopping (except food or gas).

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The new moon is your chance to think about your spiritual values and tiny resolutions. “Do not take lightly small good deeds, believing they can hardly help; for drops of water, one by one, in time can fill a giant pot.” — Dilgo Khyentse.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your focus is on friendships — what they mean to you and what kind of a friend you are. Use the new moon to think how to improve your friendships. Meanwhile, most of this day is a moon alert. (Restrict spending to food and gas.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The new moon is at the top of your chart. This is the day to do a reality check and think about the direction you’re headed in. Are you going where you really want to go? Commit to nothing, because there’s a moon alert for most of this day.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The new moon is a great chance to think about what travel or further education you want to explore. (Or medical or legal goals.) Because it’s a moon alert, don’t act or commit. Just fill your data bank.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

The sun, the new moon and retrograde Mercury are all in one of your money houses. However, there is a moon alert. Therefore, resist the urge to act or commit financially. Get your information, but wait until tomorrow to act.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Relations with partners, spouses and close friends will be interesting, because the sun, the new moon and Mercury retrograde are all opposite your sign. (People from your past are popping up.) Because there is a moon alert, commit to nothing. Don’t agree to anything. Tread water.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

In one way, this is an excellent day for you to think about how you can boost your health, as well as how you can improve your job. However, because there is a moon alert, do not take action yet. Make notes and observations; but wait until tomorrow.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a very creative day for you! Enjoy shmoozing and socializing with others, especially old flames and people from your past. Restrict spending to food and gas because of the moon alert.

Port of Churchill sale to group of First Nations will happen: chief

Kristin Annable 3 minute read Monday, Sep. 12, 2016

THE PAS — The purchase of the Port of Churchill by a consortium of First Nations “will happen,” says Mathias Colomb First Nation Chief Arlen Dumas.

“We are about making a sound business decision and we are doing our due diligence — I can’t get into the specifics of it — but we are moving forward with the communities that we are partnering. This will happen,” Dumas said.

“We are in an arrangement and we are moving forward. We are still doing our due diligence, but it is going to happen. You just have to be patient.”

Omnitrax Canada began negotiating the deal to sell the Hudson Bay Railway and Port of Churchill to the consortium late last year. When the potential deal was announced in January both sides said they were confident the purchase of the port and railway would soon be complete.

Lawyer working on unpaid tax bill in Costa Rica, Pallister says

Larry Kusch 1 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018

Three-and-a-half months after acknowledging he owed luxury taxes on his Costa Rican vacation home, Brian Pallister now admits that the bill remains unpaid.

In a year-end interview, the premier expressed frustration at being unable to make the payment, citing unspecified problems in navigating the Costa Rican bureaucracy.

While he told the Canadian Press in late August that he had paid what he owed — roughly C$8,000, including penalties — it turns out that he had, in fact, transferred the money to his Costa Rican lawyer, Paul Oporta, to carry out the transaction.

"I've been assured by the lawyer that he is endeavouring his very best to get it done," Pallister said of the tax payment.

Blood services: need 1-M new donors in next 5 years

Tiago Resko 4 minute read Yesterday at 7:05 AM CDT

Getting a tattoo or going out to a bar are common things to do when turning 18, but Saige Zdebiak’s first act of adulthood was donating blood.

“It was always kind of a goal of mine. I’ve always wanted to do it because my mom’s done it hundreds of times,” said the now-22-year-old while donating at Canadian Blood Services earlier this week.

Zdebiak needed a heart transplant when she was three and developed Lyme disease when she was 10. She gives back today so health-care workers can continue to help people the way they helped her.

She is one of 400,000 donors to Canadian Blood Services across the country — but it’s still not enough to meet the recent spike in demand.

Critics pan Tories’ French education funding boost

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022

TORY ministers touted new funding for French education at a mid-day news conference Tuesday — an event political opponents are calling a smoke screen for scathing criticism about second-language resources in a provincial report that was released hours after the event.

Shortly after noon, Advanced Education Minister Jon Reyes and Rochelle Squires, minister responsible for francophone affairs, announced the Manitoba government would be earmarking additional funds for education programs at the University of Saint-Boniface.

The duo, alongside university president Sophie Bouffard, indicated the province will start picking up a $350,000 annual tab — a sum that has been covered by temporary federal grants since 2017— to ensure USB can continue to graduate as many as 70 French teachers every year.

“(Its) bachelor of education program is the only program in Manitoba designed entirely to prepare students to teach in the public school system’s français and French Immersion programs,” Reyes told reporters, during a bilingual news conference.
