ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is your kind of day because it’s full of potential adventure, fun and games. Above all, be open to trying something new and different. (You might have no choice.) Take a spontaneous short trip. See new places and meet new faces. Jot down clever new ideas.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be smart and keep an eye on your banking situation as well as your cash and possessions to protect yourself from loss, theft or damage. This is because something unexpected could impact these areas. Stay on top of things to avoid regrets.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The moon is in your sign, which gives you a slight edge over all the other signs. However, the moon is also lined up with wild, wacky, unpredictable Uranus, which means you feel impulsive, and this day is slightly accident-prone. Keep your eyes open.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You might feel a bit restless and not know why. This is because your ruler the moon is hiding, and it is lined up with unpredictable Uranus. Meanwhile, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are in your sign bringing you many opportunities to enjoy this day, especially through conversation.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You might meet a real character. Or perhaps, someone you know will do something that surprises you. Whatever the case, new ideas and new possibilities might emerge from your exchanges with friends and groups. With Mars at the top of your chart, you’re up for anything.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Be aware that authority figures you encounter might do something you least expect. For example, you could be busted. Or they might issue an unexpected demand or instruction. Very likely, you’ll be caught by surprise.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Travel plans might suddenly change, be delayed or get cancelled. Or perhaps you suddenly have to travel when you did not expect to do so. You might also have an opportunity to learn something exciting, fresh and different — something that expands your world.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Double-check banking details and anything that relates to shared wealth, property and responsibilities, because these areas will be impacted by sudden change. Don’t let this situation be one where you snooze, you lose.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a lively day. You’re up for hard work, however, spouses, partners and close friends might also throw you a curveball or do something you least expect. You might need to be skilful and diplomatic in dealing with someone. (You can do this.)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Your work routine will be interrupted. This can be good news — or not so good news. Whatever the case, be smart and give yourself extra time so you have wiggle room to deal with the unexpected. Surprising news related to health or legal matters might also arise.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Parents should be extra-vigilant, because this is an accident-prone day for kids. Be especially vigilant about keeping young children away from hazardous situations. Meanwhile, your social scene will be full of surprises. An unexpected invite might come your way. Perhaps plans will change.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Small appliances might break down or a minor outage could occur at home because something unexpected will impact your domestic routine. Perhaps someone unexpected will knock on the door. Stock the fridge so you’re ready for anything.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Chris Evans (1981) shares your birthday. You have wide-ranging interests and are open to change. You’re curious, innovative and thoughtful. This is a slower-paced year. Take time to rejuvenate your energy. Focus on business and personal relationships and hang out with people who have your back. Concentrate on your needs and what brings you happiness.

Few consumer-facing industries illustrate the potential and pitfalls of artificial intelligence more than the financial services sector.

Generative AI — the technology powering chatbots that can seemingly think and provide reasonably correct, if not insightful, answers to our questions — is arguably a wonder of the modern world.

The potential for providing financial advice is indeed palpable. Then again, it’s not hard to imagine the technology running amok especially with people’s money.

A recent report on digital banking services provides insight on the risks and opportunities.

Too close to call in Assiniboia

Marsha McLeod 3 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023

The Winnipeg constituency of Assiniboia was too close to call Tuesday, with the NDP candidate leading over the incumbent Tory minister of seniors and long-term care.

At 11:15 p.m., Elections Manitoba, reporting just seven of 18 polls, had the NDP’s Nellie Kennedy with a 562-vote lead over Progressive Conservative incumbent Scott Johnston in the swing riding on the western edge of the city.

Losing the seat would be a blow for the Tories, but it would be a moral, rather than a functional, one. A win for the PC incumbent would do little to dent the NDP’s majority victory. Liberal Charles Ward was running a distant third.

A NDP win would be a reversal. In the 2016 and 2019 elections, the party lost Assiniboia to the PCs by roughly 16- and nine-point margins, respectively. Johnston won with 44 per cent of the vote in 2019.

Hospital window smasher gets 90 days in jail

Tessa Adamski 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

BRANDON — A 35-year-old man from The Pas was sentenced to 90 days in jail after he admitted to smashing a garage window in the ambulance bay of the Brandon hospital while intoxicated.

James Constant pleaded guilty in Brandon provincial court on Thursday to mischief under $5,000 and breaching a probation order that prohibited him from possessing weapons. Two additional charges, involving failing to comply with a probation order and possessing a dangerous weapon, were stayed.

On July 15, Constant was taken to the Brandon Regional Health Centre by ambulance after he overdosed and became “aggressive” and “unco-operative” with paramedics, says an agreed statement of facts read in court by Crown attorney Rich Lonstrup.

“He took a piece of wood and smashed the garage-door window within the ambulance bay,” Lonstrup said.

Scraped knuckles notwithstanding, wall-climbing proves a thrilling diversion

Melissa Martin 8 minute read Friday, Feb. 4, 2022

There’s a kid clambering up the wall, and he’s flying, because there is always a kid on the wall who is flying, because kids are lighter and bendier and they haven’t yet developed a real fear of death. They don’t seem so afraid of falling. They reach to the next spot without wondering how the stretch might wrench a lingering pain into their shoulders, their backs, their necks.

I watch the kid as he flies up the wall, toes pointed as he launches to catch a thin polyurethane wedge, covering a metre or more of empty vertical space in an instant. His fingers catch the wedge, then he taps his other hand to it, thus finishing the route he’d begun. It’s a hard one, so difficult I can’t even contort myself enough to get off the ground.

The kid dangles for a minute, letting his legs sway in the air. Then he lets go and falls more than three metres to the mat, landing the way he was taught, which has now become second-nature: feet first, knees slightly bent, rolling backwards to disperse the impact’s momentum through his buttocks and hips and up along the curve of his spine.

He stands up and scampers off, ready to try another route up the wall. Beside me, my friend shakes his head.

Former Tory cabinet minister runs for Brandon trustee

Abiola Odutola 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

BRANDON — Jim McCrae, a former attorney general of Manitoba, has registered to run for a seat on the Brandon School Division board of trustees.

McCrae, 77, had a long political career as a Tory cabinet minister and before that, a Brandon city councillor.

He said his decades of public service and education experience have prepared him to contribute to the governance of the school division.

“My last cabinet position was as minister of education and training. I travelled extensively in Manitoba and met with many teachers and others involved with the education of our children,” McCrae told the Brandon Sun.
