MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Capricorn.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

You have lots of common sense and can think very clearly. However, a boss or someone in authority might say something that makes you doubt yourself or question your decisions. Don’t fall for this. Enjoy entertaining or redecorating at home.

Morena Baccarin is 47 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You are energized, particularly about travel or issues related to politics and religion. When it comes to finances, you will be conservative, practical and have long-range goals. Be aware that information related to travel might be dicey. Double-check whatever makes you question something.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is an excellent day for getting things done because you have an orderly state of mind and a sense of discipline. You’re sensible. Nevertheless, you might feel confused about shared property, taxes, debt or something to do with shared responsibilities. Clarify what you don’t know before you act.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Research will go well because you have the patience and stamina to seek solutions to your problems or answers to your questions. Be skeptical about what a friend or partner might have to say, especially if it relates to a boss or a parent. Get your facts to be sure.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You might lead a group, because people see you as sensible and ready to assume the responsibilities. You might also seek the advice of someone older. Nevertheless, do not be confused by media or political discussions. Stay on track.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You have lots of energy to play and assert yourself in social situations. This high energy will help you be competitive in sports and physical activities. Meanwhile, a boss or someone in authority might have practical advice. If confused about romance, wait a day.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Double-check anything a partner, spouse or close friend says, because issues could be blurred or cloudy. Be confident about dealing with shared property, taxes and inheritances. Trust legal advice or someone from afar.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a tricky day, because in one way you feel confident, assertive and even persuasive, yet something might make you doubt yourself. Trust your common sense. Issues related to shared property and the resources of others are solid.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re happy to work hard if you can boost your earnings. You might take on responsibilities related to kids or something to do with the hospitality industry or sports. However, if something makes you doubtful, check it out. You want your decisions to be solid.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

When it comes to your job or dealing with your kids or something related to sports, the entertainment world or the hospitality industry, you feel confident. Nevertheless, someone at home or a family member might create self-doubt within you. Trust your instincts.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is an excellent day to deal with kids, take the lead sports or offer practical suggestions related to the hospitality industry or entertainment world. You know what you’re doing. Don’t let yourself be derailed by self-doubts. Stick with what you know.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Because a parent or a family member has assured you of something in a practical way, you feel confident about sharing this information with friends or members of a group. Don’t let someone who is worried about finances or the cost of something discourage you. Go forward with your ideas and trust your instincts, because you’re very intuitive.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Morena Baccarin (1979) shares your birthday. You are intellectual, courageous and undaunted by challenges. You’re also quick-witted and analytical. This year is the end of a nine-year cycle. Take inventory of your life. It’s time to let go of people, places and things that have held you back. Do some internal and external housecleaning.

Councillor demands better sidewalk clearing

Katie May 4 minute read Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024

A City of Winnipeg councillor is pushing to make the clearing of sidewalks right down to pavement the same priority as removing snow on the busiest streets.

“People are getting hurt,” said Coun. Matt Allard, who introduced a motion at council’s meeting Thursday.

It calls for snow and ice to be cleared from sidewalks at the same level as Priority 1 streets, regardless of whether the sidewalk or active transportation path is on a Priority 1, 2, or 3 (residential) street.

The motion also calls for plow operators and contractors to be subject to fines if they push snow onto sidewalks and don’t remove it, and for the city to establish a reserve fund for snow-clearing operations.

Lawyer working on unpaid tax bill in Costa Rica, Pallister says

Larry Kusch 1 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018

Three-and-a-half months after acknowledging he owed luxury taxes on his Costa Rican vacation home, Brian Pallister now admits that the bill remains unpaid.

In a year-end interview, the premier expressed frustration at being unable to make the payment, citing unspecified problems in navigating the Costa Rican bureaucracy.

While he told the Canadian Press in late August that he had paid what he owed — roughly C$8,000, including penalties — it turns out that he had, in fact, transferred the money to his Costa Rican lawyer, Paul Oporta, to carry out the transaction.

"I've been assured by the lawyer that he is endeavouring his very best to get it done," Pallister said of the tax payment.

No special parking for big man on campus

By Nick Martin 4 minute read Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015

New Red River College president Paul Vogt has to pay for his parking on campus -- and he has to scramble to find a spot just like everyone else.

RRC made public Vogt's contract Monday on his first day on the job under a five-year deal, a deal the college said is intended to be in significant contrast to the years of the scandal-plagued former president Stephanie Forsyth.

"The intent of the contract was to be in contrast" to the Forsyth saga, Red River board of governors chairman Lloyd Schreyer said in an interview.

"Given the history that occurred, given the review by the province, we wanted to have a contract that was modest," Schreyer said. "We wanted to be proactive and transparent -- we're trying to re-establish a relationship with the community."

Man accused of impaired driving nabbed for speeding near park

2 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

BRANDON — A 22-year-old man is facing several charges, including impaired driving, after he was arrested last week for going 100 kilometres per hour near a park.

On July 16 around 4:30 p.m., Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP officers saw a truck that appeared to be travelling 100 km/h in a 40 km/h zone near a park in Ebb and Flow First Nation.

The truck was seen near the intersection of Lake Road Northeast and Northwest Road, RCMP said Tuesday.

Police realized the truck matched a description of a vehicle that had fled from officers multiple times earlier in the week, the release said.

Blood services: need 1-M new donors in next 5 years

Tiago Resko 4 minute read Yesterday at 7:05 AM CDT

Getting a tattoo or going out to a bar are common things to do when turning 18, but Saige Zdebiak’s first act of adulthood was donating blood.

“It was always kind of a goal of mine. I’ve always wanted to do it because my mom’s done it hundreds of times,” said the now-22-year-old while donating at Canadian Blood Services earlier this week.

Zdebiak needed a heart transplant when she was three and developed Lyme disease when she was 10. She gives back today so health-care workers can continue to help people the way they helped her.

She is one of 400,000 donors to Canadian Blood Services across the country — but it’s still not enough to meet the recent spike in demand.
