MOON ALERT: Caution. Avoid shopping (except for food and gas) and important decisions all day until after 9:30 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Gemini into Cancer.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert — see above. This is a chatty day for you. Grab every opportunity to schmooze with friends, neighbours and relatives. In the next few weeks, you will redecorate where you live and entertain at home more.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert because the moon is in your money house, tempting you to spend money. Don’t do it. Restrict spending to food and gas. Mars moves into your sign boosting your energy for the next six weeks.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The moon is in your sign for most of the day; however, it’s a moon alert all day. (See above.) You’re definitely tempted to shop for pretty things. Postpone this temptation until tomorrow. In the meantime, you’re keen to talk to others and share your ideas.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Fair Venus moves into your sign to stay for the next few weeks. While it’s in your sign, you’ll find it easy to be charming and diplomatic with everyone. This will also be a lovely window of time for you to shop for wardrobe goodies — but not now. (See moon alert above.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Mars moves to the top of your chart to stay for the next six weeks, arousing your ambition as never before. Because Mars will make you identify more with your work, you’ll work hard to achieve what you want. However, Mars can also create conflict with bosses.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re high-viz. People notice you. (Some know personal details about your private life.) Mars changes signs activating your desire to travel, as well as to explore opportunities in medicine, the law, higher education and publishing.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is the perfect day to do something different. Explore your own city. Take a drive in the country. Learn something new and meet people from different backgrounds. Most of this day is a moon alert, so restrict spending to food and gas.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Check the moon alert because the moon is in one of your money houses. Avoid important decisions. Restrict spending to food and gas. Mars moves opposite your sign to stay for the next six weeks, which can make you impatient with others. Go gently.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You might have to go more than halfway when dealing with others, especially those who are closest to you. However, be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert. (See above.) Fortunately, you’re getting ready to work hard.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a playful, fun-loving time for you — especially for athletics and competitive sports. Today however, the moon alert (see above) might affect your work. Postpone important decisions and restrict spending to food and gas. Be smart.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

In the next few months, your home scene will be more chaotic due to visiting guests, renovations, redecorating projects or residential moves. Fortunately, work-related issues are blessed. (In fact, a work-related romance might begin.) Restrict spending to food and gas.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a quiet, gentler day. Home repairs and family discussions might take place; nevertheless, relax if you can. It’s also a lovely day to schmooze socially with others. Enjoy romance, fun outings and playful times with kids.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Writer, actress, producer Tina Fey (1970) shares your birthday. You have a straightforward approach that cuts incisively to the heart of an issue. You’re energetic, steadfast and compassionate. This is a year of service, perhaps to family. Take care of yourself so you can be a resource for those who turn to you for guidance courage and comfort.

Let courts focus on important cases

Editorial 4 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018

There’s something wrong with Manitoba’s legal system when the overloaded court dockets include breaches of bail conditions that are relatively puny.

Perhaps it’s a person who missed her bus and therefore missed an appointment with her probation officer. Perhaps it’s someone who was spotted drinking beer despite the alcohol ban on his probation order. Perhaps it’s someone who communicated with a friend despite a no-contact order.

In some places, such minor violations are handled sensibly; probation officers and prosecutors have discretion to treat relatively trivial violations with relatively trivial consequences, freeing up resources to target the highest-risk offenders.

But Manitoba is infamous for its zero-tolerance policy on alleged court-order violations. This is the province where the weighty and expensive court system — judges, lawyers and support staff — gather to hear the case of a guy who was late coming home and missed his court-ordered curfew.

Some drinks to choo-choo choose on Valentine’s Day

Some drinks to choo-choo choose on Valentine’s Day

Ben Sigurdson 5 minute read Monday, Feb. 23, 2026

If you write a drinks column and it falls on Feb. 14, you are pretty much legally obligated to expound on drinks for Valentine’s Day … drinks to share with your sweetie, tipples to try with chocolate, pink wines and so on and so forth.

With that in mind, I hit the shops to track down some drinks that fit the bill — and if you don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, well, here some long-weekend libations for your consideration.

If wine’s not your valentine’s proverbial cup of tea, why not pop the cork on a sharing-sized beer — perhaps the 3 Monts Blonde Bière de Flandre (Saint Sylvestre Cappal, France — $8.53/750ml bottle, Liquor Marts and beer vendors)? Deep gold in appearance and with a frothy white head, this French strong beer brings deep malt notes along with cracked oat, bread dough, earthy and red apple aromas. It’s medium-plus bodied and dry, with fresh malt, cracked oat, herbal and bread dough flavours, with a subtle peppery note, modest hops and, at 8.5 per cent alcohol, a long and warm finish. Pop the cork (yes, it’s bottled under cork) and enjoy. 4/5

One can’t do Valentine’s Day drinks without some bubbly, and this one has a twist — it’s a sparkling red. The Cantina Settecani NV Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro (Emilia Romagna, Italy — $23, Ellement Wine + Spirits) is deep garnet in colour with modest effervescence, offering plum, blackberry, violet and black cherry aromas. It’s medium-bodied and dry, with just a hint of residual sugar, and brings big blackberry, plum, dark chocolate and raspberry flavours with light tannin, medium acidity and, at 10.5 per cent alcohol, a modest finish. Chill for 20 minutes and surprise your sweetie with a fizzy red. This one’s available at Ellement Wine + Spirits, but most private wine stores should have a few lambruscos on hand — it’s a style of wine that’s definitely worth a try. 4/5

Fringe foot traffic gives Exchange shops boost

Tiago Resko 4 minute read Yesterday at 8:24 PM CDT

This year’s edition of the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival has brought a rise in customer numbers, businesses in the Exchange District say, noting more events like it would also improve the area’s safety.

The increased foot traffic that accompanies the annual downtown event has Más Coffee Co. logging roughly 50 extra customers per day — “a huge increase,” said coffee shop employee Jay Koensgen.

“We’ll have our regulars come in, of course, but since then, Fringe has definitely boosted it.”

Koensgen said he thinks it would make a huge difference for businesses in the area if events like Fringe happened more often. “It’s just good for like economical stuff, environment, community bringing everyone together for a common cause would be really good.”

‘Dream’ move: DJS Arcade Pizzeria back in play in Grand Marais

Aaron Epp 5 minute read Yesterday at 8:23 PM CDT

Just when Grand Marais residents thought it might be game over for their local arcade, James and Sara Woodman swooped in to take it to the next level.

The husband and wife purchased, renovated and reopened DJS Arcade Pizzeria in the community, south of Grand Beach in the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, this spring.

The business features an array of new and retro arcade games. Employees serve New York-style pizza made using a new recipe James created after more than 30 years of making pies.

The arcade was a constant in the 51-year-old’s life when he was growing up in Grand Marais. He and Sara, 38, purchased it in early 2019 and ran it until fall 2021 before selling it and moving to the West Coast.

One Trunk's new play boldly goes into the realm of science fiction

Randall King 5 minute read Wednesday, May. 8, 2019

Space, as William Shatner’s Captain Kirk never tired of telling us, is the “final frontier.”

It certainly remains a largely unexplored undiscovered country when it comes to theatre. It seems at some point, the theatre gods threw up their collective hands and conceded that the primary delivery systems for science fiction would be books, film, television or graphic novels.

That in itself renders the play Red Earth an exciting proposition. Not only does it put a sci-fi story on the stage, it does so in conjunction with another prominent genre interpreter: the graphic novel.

With the new play Red Earth, One Trunk Theatre is attempting a science-fiction story incorporating of Mars and astronauts and the end of the world. At the same time, the play is synced with the release of a graphic novel iteration by Winnipeg comics artist and writer GMB Chomichuk.
