Happy Monday!
It’s that time of year when folks all over the world, including you and me, are thinking about what gift to buy their pets for the holidays.
The options are seemingly endless, so with only 12 shopping days left, I’ve decided to share some terrific ideas that showed up in my inbox.

First, moderndog magazine unashamedly emailed me a list of “pawfect presents” for the naughty and supremely nice dogs in my life. This season they recommend crunchy, natural treats, an ear rinse that claims to help flush out debris, or the Puppy Cake Santa’s Cookie Mix. The writers there also included a list of inexpensive gifts such as colourful vegan leather collars by Hot Dogs All Dress Inc., $22, and a Dexas Scrubuster silicone dog brush, $15.
Writer Sean Zucker at The Wildest also delivered to my inbox his own list of dog gift ideas. It includes, among other doggie delights, an ugly holiday sweater to indulge this season’s festive Instagram trend, $49; a personalized dog bowl inscribed with Fido’s moniker, $105; an interactive toy called the Wicked Ball, $50; a pet pampering kit that features pomegranate-scented shampoo, refresher and cologne, $28; an Ubbe, which is essentially a fillable toy not unlike the popular Kongs, $21; dog sneakers, $52; the Foggy Dog bandana and scrunchie set, $32; a Modernbeast dog bed, $130; and a Barbour dog toy, $25.
For the cat enthusiast, The Wildest writer Avery Felman sent her suggestions for feline-friendly stocking stuffers that include a crinkly ball by Myler, $7; an automatic cheese toy that is similar to whack-a-mole, $27; Pet Winery’s Meow and Chandon Catnip beverage that promises to take the edge off during the holidays, $15; Misohandmae catnip sardine toys, $15; a Frida cat collar, $14; Shameless Pets Kitty Cane crunchy cat treats, $3; or the KittyNook Cutie Catz Christmas knit scarf, $21.
Now, hopefully, one or two of these gift ideas, which are mostly available on Amazon, will ignite your festive fire. And if that’s not the case, there’s always your local dollar store where last week I myself bought Oliver and Guapo a stuffie each for a total of $9.25.

California girl licensed to own unicorn — if she finds one
A girl named Madeline, with a vivid imagination and remarkable awareness of how bureaucracy can dash dreams, got her wish when she asked Los Angeles animal control authorities for a licence to own a unicorn — if she’s able to find one.
The first-of-its-kind permit came with strings attached, however: the mythical creature must be provided ample exposure to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows and have its horn polished at least once a month with a soft cloth. Read more.
Extinctions, shrinking habitat spur ‘rewilding’ in cities
In a bustling metro area of 4.3 million people, Yale University wildlife biologist Nyeema Harris ventures into isolated thickets to study Detroit’s most elusive residents — coyotes, foxes, raccoons and skunks among them.
Harris and colleagues have placed trail cameras in woodsy sections of 25 city parks for the past five years. They’ve recorded thousands of images of animals that emerge mostly at night to roam and forage, revealing a wild side many locals might not know exists. Read more.

Farmer: Georgia dog injured saving sheep from coyote attack
A Georgia sheepdog is recovering at home two days after killing a pack of coyotes that attacked his owner’s flock of sheep, farmer John Wierwiller said.
Casper, a 20-month old Great Pyrenees from Decatur, fought off a pack of coyotes who were threatening John Wierwiller’s sheep farm, he said. The fight lasted longer than half an hour, left eight coyotes dead and bloodied Casper, with skin and part of his tail torn off, Wierwiller told Atlanta’s WAGA-TV. Read more.
