Let’s start tonight with a reminder the glass is still more than half-full.
Unlike last year, Omicron does not appear ready to reprise its role as the Grinch at Christmas. And while COVID is far from done, we remain in a far better place now than we’ve been for much of the pandemic.
Having said that, I do worry when I see headlines like the one today in the Los Angeles Times that warns a possible indoor mask mandate looms as L.A. County has now entered the CDC-defined “high” COVID community level.

Given the latest benchmarks, the most populous county in the United States is on a trajectory that could see a mask mandate announced on Jan. 5 and go into effect a day later.
OK, so sunny California is a long way from cold and snowy Winnipeg. What impact does a spike in the vicinity of Disneyland have on a city home to Tinkertown? I’m not sure there is one other the fact we know COVID case counts tend to rise when cold weather forces us indoors. And if case counts are rising in the warmth around LAX, what might that mean down the road for us in frigid YWG?
This isn’t a drinking game, but you might need to take a gulp of that half-full glass of mulled wine or whatever holiday libation is in your hand when you realize that 10 million people live in L.A. County. That’s almost as many people in all of Western Canada.
And if a population that large enters the New Year having to resolve to wear facemasks again, is that a hangover or a wake-up call for everyone else?
