Bombers can’t lose, right?

Good day to all.

Nope, I don’t see it happening. And despite Free Press reporter Taylor Allen’s assertion Thursday that the B.C. Lions have the tools to dismantle the mighty Winnipeg Blue Bombers, I firmly believe this city’s CFL squad will reserve a spot in the Grey Cup with a victory late Sunday afternoon.

And then win the whole thing Nov. 20 in Regina for a third consecutive season.

Taylor wasn’t predicting a win for the visiting Nathan Rourke-led Lions in the West Division final, just leaving room for the possibility.

He and fellow football scribe Jeff Hamilton are a whole lot closer to the situation than yours truly. And I’m not being a homer (well, maybe a little) but I still figure no matter the conditions at IG Field at kickoff, QB Zach Collaros and the Bombers won’t be denied. There’s a spot in the press box with my name on it, thanks to Bombers PR director Darren Cameron.

I also expect the Toronto Argonauts to trip up the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division final in the early game.

On a personal note, we’re all moved into our condo. Big change for the Bells, but we’re a week in and loving it.

Just staring out my east-facing window and watching a few people clear off their driveways after last night’s major dump of snow, reaffirming our decision was the right one.

I’m not even sure where my shovel is…

I don’t just work at the Free Press, I read the bulk of the paper every day (mostly online) and have been doing so for the better part of 50 years. Mom and Dad had the paper delivered to the house on Donwood Drive, and I couldn’t wait to get home from school and devour the sports section, with so many fine writers such as Reyn Davis, Marvin McDonald and Ralph Bagley.

I’d read every story on the old Jets of the WHA, the Blue Bombers and the MLB, and pore over the stats pages, particularly the Expos and Maple Leafs box scores, and the NBA standings (in the late ’70s, I was a crazy Seattle SuperSonics fan and lived and died with every Jack Sikma jump shot).

By the time I got to high school, I knew I wanted to be a Free Press reporter. By the time I graduated from the University of Winnipeg, I knew a 2.67 grade-point average wasn’t exactly a springboard to one of Canada’s top journalism schools. By the time I finished the grossly underrated Creative Communications program at Red River College, I was ready to work. OK, so it took me 13 years to make it to Mountain Avenue. The last two decades have been remarkable, culminating with my dream job: Sports Editor.

I firmly believe my profession has deep meaning — but we’ve had our struggles. Hardly a day goes by without another obituary for the newspaper industry; yet, the fact is we need local news more than ever. Local journalism carries the responsibility of spreading news and information the public deserves to know. And that’s our bread and butter. Then, now, and always.

Our devoted readers have a role to play in our future. We recently launched the Free Press Patron program, where, for an annual contribution of $150, you can play a pivotal role in ensuring we continue delivering trusted information to the community for years to come. You also unlock a series of exclusive benefits as a show of appreciation for your support.

Our goal is to get 1,500 patrons signed up. If you’d like to join us, or read more about the initiative, click here.

Thank you, kindly, for your generosity and continued support.

Our coverage

A path to greatness: FP football writer Jeff Hamilton visited Zach Collaros’ home town and spoke with those closest to him, to find out how the Blue Bomber quarterback’s strength of character and skill took shape.

Armed and dangerous: Collaros will have no shortage of options when he looks for a receiver in the West Division final Sunday, reports Taylor Allen.

Pro hoops on the way: The Canadian Elite Basketball League announced a new Winnipeg franchise, confirming news Mike Sawatzky broke days before.
