Travel rule No. 1 – pack like you’re on the lam

Growing up in a big family with little money, travel wasn’t part of my life. It seemed to me that seeing the world up close was a great privilege, and I often wondered what that was like. Now, as an avid traveller who has been fortunate to visit many amazing places, my aim is to make the most of every trip. No matter where I’m going, or for how long.
These days, I endeavour to make travel experiences the best they can be. I’ve learned what makes it easier, and most enjoyable.
Here are some tried-and-true tips I picked up along the way that I’d like to share with you. Starting with what to take, and how to get it there:
The first rule of traveling is to pack like you’re on the lam. While it might seem like a great idea to fill your largest piece of luggage with multiple wardrobe choices, several pairs of footwear, and every accessory you could ever want, the reality is that big bags are a burden.
That’s why my suitcase is always carry-on size – even if I plan to check it in for the flight. When you’re in and out of airports, vehicles and hotels, and sometimes having to walk substantial distances with luggage in tow, trust me when I say you’re going to appreciate a smaller and lighter load.
So how do you cut back? Step one is to give serious thought to the activities. Depending on the circumstances, I might even make a list of what I’ll be doing, and what I’ll wear. For example, if I know I have two business meetings, a social gathering, a fancy dinner, and an outdoor activity, I make sure to pre-select the clothes that I’ll need for those things. Not only does it make packing more efficient, it also eliminates the “what am I going to wear” situation.
Next, after making some tough choices, lay everything out so you can see it all together – and proceed to take away. Do you really need five pairs of pants? No, you don’t. Can you get by without eight shirts? Yes, you can. Will you survive without two hoodies? Indeed, you will.
Think about actual number of days you’ll be away and plan for that. Keep in mind you can wear something more than once. You can also do a little laundry if needed. Get more out of less by choosing versatile pieces, neutral colors, and thinner fabrics that are wrinkle-free. Unless you happen to like ironing. Which I definitely don’t. (Remember, it’s about making travel most enjoyable!)
Limit yourself to two jackets and wear the bulkiest one enroute to your destination. Bring only comfortable shoes that you could walk in all day. If more than one pair, wear the clunkiest on the way, and pack those that take less space.

Packing light is key to enjoyable travel experiences. When you’re in and out of airports, vehicles and hotels, you’re going to appreciate a smaller and lighter load.
In addition to your suitcase, a small backpack as carry-on allows for a little extra space without having to drag around a second roller. I like to put all my non-clothing items into the backpack – toiletries (including any medications you may be taking – you don’t want to lose those), accessories, cables, chargers, headphones, sunglasses, a book if I’m reading one, and a hat if I’ll need one. I also have a tiny nylon backpack that compresses down to nearly nothing, and is super-handy for daytrips and whatnot…
PART 1 of 2: My next Travelations will share more travel trips, including traveling with intent, moving beyond your comfort zone, and getting the most out of every journey.
