The Maples

Cara Abueg is a 16-year-old student who just completed Grade 11 at Maples Collegiate.

“School has been going well, and I enjoy being involved in both academics and sports,” Cara said. “My favourite class is English because I enjoy reading different types of literature, expressing my ideas through writing, and having discussions that make me think critically. I also like how English allows me to be creative while improving my communication skills.”

Cara is an impressively academic and athletic young lady.

Cara Abueg, 16, will be going into Grade 12 at Maples Collegiate next year.

“I play volleyball as well as indoor and outdoor track and field,” she said. “Each sport challenges me in different ways, and I enjoy balancing both throughout the year. I enjoy volleyball because it is fast-paced and requires strong teamwork, communication, and trust between teammates. I enjoy track and field because it pushes me to challenge myself individually and work toward personal goals.”

Both sports have taught Cara discipline, perseverance, and the value of hard work.

“In volleyball, I play setter. I enjoy being a setter because I get to be involved in every play and help create opportunities for my teammates to succeed. It requires quick decision-making and strong leadership skills, which I enjoy developing,” she said. “In track and field, I compete in the long jump and triple jump. I like these events because they combine speed, technique, and power, and I enjoy seeing my hard work pay off as I continue to improve my distances.”

Cara said her coaches are supportive, knowledgeable, and always encourage her to be the best athlete she can be.

“They push me to work hard while helping me stay confident in my abilities. My teammates are hardworking, positive, and supportive, and they make practices and competitions enjoyable. Being part of a team has allowed me to build strong friendships and learn the importance of supporting one another.”

Cara lives in the northwest part of the city with her mom Rhea, dad Cary, and siblings Cris and Caden.

“I want to give a huge thank you to my parents for everything they have done for me,” she said. “No matter what, they have always been my biggest supporters and have believed in me even when I doubted myself. They have made countless sacrifices, spent so much time driving me to practices and competitions, and have always been there to cheer me on through both the good moments and the difficult ones. Their love, encouragement, and support mean more to me than words can express. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them, and I am so grateful for everything they do for me every single day. I love them so much and am lucky to have them by my side as I continue to pursue my goals.”

There is no doubt Cara has a fantastic and bright future ahead of her. She has this advice to offer other athletes:

“Stay dedicated, work hard, and never give up on your goals. There will be challenges and setbacks along the way, but those experiences help you grow and become stronger. Trust the process, stay positive, and remember to enjoy the journey because the lessons you learn through sports are just as important as the results.”
