Thirty-four young athletes participated in the T3 Triathlon Club Kids of Steel Splash & Dash at the 17 Wing fitness and recreation centre on Aug. 12.

Morgan Yarish, with a time of 29:03 for the 500-metre swim and 4.8-kilometre run topped the 14- and 15-year-old boys division. Zayden Verheul in 6-7, Aric Tetrault in 8-9, Carson Cortvriendt in 10-11 and Mark Naylor in 12-13 led the other boys divisions. They competed in runs with the distance increased by age group.

Emily Unger was the only girl up to the challenge in the combined 500-metre swim and 4.8-kilometre run for girls aged 14 and 15. Hailee Morisseau, with a time of 18:44, edged Emily Davidson by three seconds in the 3.6-kilometre run for 12-13 girls. The 10-11 girls 2.4-kilometre run attracted the most competitors, seven, with Tess Derksen’s time of 11:52  more than a minute faster than Megan Van Heyst. Riley Petley and Alyssa Ryan ran the 1.2-kilometre for 8-9 girls and Avery Arnold was the only entry in the 6-7 girls division

Three teams from Winnipeg are part of the 54-member contingent that will be representing Manitoba at the Canada 55+ Games in Sydney, N.S., Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. A team of Elaine Delannoy, Judi Mason, Pat Sigfusson and Lynne Howden and a second team of Jean Ross, Marie Montsion, Donna Sainsbury and Shirley Maurice will compete in curling.

In slo-pitch, the Winnipeg South Sharpies will try to bring home a medal. The Sharpies lineup includes familiar softball names in head man Allan Sharpe, Gary Loeb, Garth (Spider) Whitlock, Bob Gross, Penny Flock and Les Newman, who spent years serving on the Softball Manitoba executive.

The Manitobans from outside the Perimeter will compete in bowling, golf, track, cribbage and both contract and duplicate bridge. No entry in washer toss! Team manager Lois Dudgeon said the average age of the Manitoba team is 70 and calls these  Games “their Olympics,” which seems a bit of a stretch to Toast and Coffee.

The Western Canada Senior Baseball Championship will be played at Koskie Field in Elmwood, Aug. 23 to 26. The first game goes at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 23, when the host Elmwood Giants led by two of the Winnipeg Senior League’s top infielders, Curtis Furber and Kevin Krasowski, meet Manitoba, represented by the Brandon All-Stars. The five-team round-robin competition concludes at 8 p.m. on Aug. 25 when Elmwood plays defending champion Trail, B.C.

Any tie-breaker will be played the following morning with the championship final scheduled for noon.
