Kalani Fuentes is a 14-year-old Grade 9 student attending Collège Jeanne-Sauvé in St. Vital.
“School is fun, I am really enjoying high school,” he said. “My favourite class is éducation physique, because we learn about physical literacy and new sports and games.”
Kalani loves sports and he loves playing all sports. At the moment he plays basketball in the Elite Empire program and soccer with Bonivital.
“I am focusing on basketball and soccer right now,” he said. “I enjoy both sports because the of the physical challenges and competition. In basketball, I am a guard/small forward (I’m smaller than other forwards ,too), and in soccer I play as a central defensive midfielder.
“All my coaches have taught me skills and are positive influences for me. It’s always fun competing with my teammates on the court and field, and we hang out when we have free time. We sometimes play video games or go to open gyms/fields to play and have fun.”
Kalani lives in St. Boniface with his dad Don, mom Phingky, and brother Ryu.
“I would like to say thanks to my parents for always helping me and making sure I am on time for everything for school and sports,” he said. “They are my biggest fans.”
Kalani hopes to play one of his favourite sports at university level.
“I know I have a lot of work to do, but I have a lot of support around me,” he said.

Kalani is a dedicated young man and his future looks very bright. He has this to offer other athletes:
“Listen to your parents and coaches. Try to eat healthy and have habits like going to bed early and doing your chores. There is always something to get better at. If you have some time spend it practicing on your own.”
