A professional modern dancer turned chiropractor with a long-standing career in west Winnipeg has opened a new practice.

Moran Chiropractic, run by Dr. Kim Moran, is located inside the Charleswood Chiropractic Office at 3404 Roblin Blvd. Moran worked out of Sun Chiropractic on Portage Avenue for nearly two decades.

Moran is accepting new clients, from newborns to nonagenarians. In addition, she’s using the launch of Moran Chiropractic as an opportunity to reacquaint herself with existing clients. All returning clients will get the chance to sit down with the doctor to re-evaluate their care.

Moran uses adjustment instruments — such as a drop table, chiro gun, or her hands — based on her patients’ needs. The client always has the final word on what tools and techniques are used, she said.

“If somebody says to me, ‘I don’t want to have my neck adjusted,’ I’m like ‘no problem, that’s your body. I completely respect that,’” Moran said. “If you ever feel like you want to know more about what’s involved, I’m happy to educate you.”

As a dancer, Moran used chiropractic as a tool to keep herself conditioned to perform. Moran graduated with a bachelor of arts from the first professional dance program associated with the University of Winnipeg.

Following her undergrad, Moran moved to Toronto to study at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. The CMCC is the only English language chiropractic college in Canada.

Moran graduated from CMCC in 2000. Soon after, she opened a practice in Downsview, a neighbourhood in Toronto’s north end. The practice was situated inside what was formerly a Canadian Forces military base. Moran called her practice PMQ, a play on the term “permanent married quarters,” which refers to housing for military families.

Having grown up in Charleswood, Moran is at home in her new practice, which is a seven-minute drive from her former digs. In under two weeks, Moran found a new venue for her work and began seeing patients.

Carol Tomas began seeing Moran shortly after she earned her accreditation. The 76-year-old retiree praises Moran for her intuitiveness and techniques that work within her comfort zone.

“You can walk in with a headache and walk out without a headache,” Tomas said.

Moran has also worked on Tomas’s knees, having undergone a double knee replacement.

The chiropractor has built relationships with health professionals working in various fields. This network allows for more integrative care, Moran said. For example, some treatment plans could include recommendations to X-ray technicians, massage therapists, or physiotherapists.

“Often, I’ll work with my patients together with a physiotherapist to get them better, faster, because that’s the point,” Moran said.
