Carrying forward a legacy

My first year as MLA for Transcona has been filled with learning, connection, and a deep appreciation for our incredible community.
This work has been shaped by the legacy of Nello Altomare, an extraordinary teacher, leader, mentor, and tireless advocate for children, families, and our community. Nello loved Transcona with his whole heart. I was proud to call him a colleague and a friend, and I am grateful for the years we worked together in education and in our community.
Nello’s example stays with me every day. When I make decisions, I often think about what he would say. I am committed to continuing his good work, and I want to share a few highlights from this past year.

One of my first priorities was making sure our constituency office was fully up and running. Our office is now open full-time with a dedicated team. We are also pleased to have a commissioner of oaths in office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., making it easier for folks to get important documents signed close to home.
Over the past year, I have had the chance to connect with so many of you at your front doors, and in the local spaces that make Transcona so special. I loved attending the Hi Neighbour Festival and spending time at the Transcona BIZ Market, where local businesses showcase the energy and creativity that define our community.
I have also had the pleasure of visiting senior centres, daycares, and community groups across Transcona. These visits are always a highlight and a reminder that Transcona is a community where people look out for one another, from our youngest residents to the seniors who helped build this neighbourhood. That is why it is so important that work is already underway on Park Manor Personal Care Home right here in Transcona.
As a former educator, February’s I Love to Read month is especially meaningful. I’m having so much fun visiting schools across Transcona and reading with students. Seeing the excitement on kids’ faces and the dedication of teachers is always a powerful reminder of why education matters.
Nello’s legacy also lives on through Manitoba’s universal school nutrition program. Every day, thousands of students access food at school so they can focus on learning instead of worrying about hunger. Nello believed deeply that no child should try to learn on an empty stomach, and I am proud to carry that vision forward.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in me during this first year. It is truly an honour to serve this community. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please reach out to our Transcona constituency office at 204-219-1189 or shannon.corbett@yourmanitoba.ca.
