Hey there, time traveller!

Summer is a great time to relax, go on vacation, recharge your batteries and get ready for the year ahead.
For recent high school graduates, it also marks a transition from going to school “because you have to,” to working or going to school because you want to. The opportunity to choose a career path and set a new course can be enjoyable, but is also a bit intimidating.
As MLA for Radisson, it’s my honour and privilege to help a few students in and around my constituency along their career paths with scholarships each year. Four students receive MLA James Teitsma Leadership Through Service Scholarship Awards. These students have consistently put the interests of others ahead of their own. They lead by example and are generous with their time and talents. They exemplify teamwork, have improving academic averages and regularly volunteer in the community. They are committed to upholding the truth and keeping their promises. They work hard and are respectful of peers, teachers and coaches. This year’s winners are:

• Jessica Barkhouse from Windsor Park Collegiate;
• Melanie Cairns from Collège Béliveau;
• Curtis Nagtegaal from Immanuel Christian School; and
• Jessica Todd from King’s School
An additional three students received MLA James Teitsma Overcomer Scholarship Awards. These students have overcome significant obstacles in their personal or family lives. They volunteer in the community and possess positive attitudes with improving academic records. They inspire others with their courage, resolve and perseverance. This year’s winners are:
• Precious Uzoh from Windsor Park Collegiate;
• Ivory Lyons from Transcona Collegiate; and
• Karl Garand-Verette from Louis Riel Arts & Technology Centre.
I am very impressed by the character of these students. Each of them demonstrates the kind of humble leadership that brings out the best in all of us. I try to bring these same qualities to my work as a member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. And like these high school graduates, I am striving to chart a new course over the coming years. Together with our provincial government, I am working to get Manitoba back on track with improved services, a balanced budget and lower taxes.
If you have ideas or concerns you would like to share with me, I’m always willing to listen. Call me at 204-691-7976, e-mail at james@jamesteitsma.ca or pop by my office Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 690B Elizabeth Rd. I look forward to hearing from you.
