Building community through recreation in Winnipeg South

Winnipeg South

Summer in Winnipeg means community centre barbecues, soccer and baseball, children at spray pads, and families spending time together outdoors.

These moments matter because community facilities are about more than recreation. They are places where people connect, volunteers step forward, and young people build confidence, friendships, and healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

That is why I have been pleased to support significant investments in recreation across Winnipeg South.

Earlier this month, Winnipeg South MP Terry Duguid took part in the groundbreaking for a new spray pad at South Winnipeg Community Centre. The project is supported through a $1 million federal investment, along with provincial and municipal contributions.

In late May, I announced a $31.7 million federal investment in the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus. This project will help serve one of Winnipeg’s fastest-growing areas and create a new hub for community life — bringing together childcare, recreation and fitness spaces, gathering areas, and opportunities for learning and programming.

We are also investing in the expansion of Dakota Community Centre through a $7.5 million federal contribution toward Phase 1 of Dakota’s third arena and recreation centre project. Community centres are often where children first put on skates, join a team, and discover the value of teamwork and commitment. Expanding this facility means more opportunities for families and more space for sport, recreation, and community use.

And not every investment needs to be a major building project to make a difference.

This summer, I was also pleased to take part in the groundbreaking for a new spray pad at South Winnipeg Community Centre, supported through a $1 million federal investment. Once completed, it will create another welcoming and accessible place for children to play, stay active, and enjoy the summer months while giving families another place to gather close to home.

From the playground to the podium, recreation plays an important role in building stronger communities and supporting healthy, active lives. I look forward to seeing many of you this summer at neighbourhood events and community gatherings across Winnipeg South.
